U.S. warns Toothpaste Bomb Threat on Flight to Russia
The U.S. government , on Wednesday ( 05/02/2014 ) local time , warned American and foreign airlines that terrorists might conceal explosives inside a tube of toothpaste in the Russian flight destination .
An official told the AFP news agency that it had "information about specific targets flying to Russia " where the Winter Olympics will be held in the resort town of Sochi next Friday .
In a statement , the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said it on a regular basis to share information relevant to the partners , both at home and abroad.
" While we do not know the specific threat for the country at this time , regular communication is an important part of our commitment to ensure we meet this priority , " the statement said . " As always , our security system includes a number of measures both seen and unseen , and the Department of Homeland Security will continue to adjust security measures in order to adjust to the growing threat , " the statement said .
National Safety Council President Barack Obama said the disclosure had no impact on existing guidelines about traveling to Sochi .
" If we receive information in the next few days and weeks that could change our assessment of the trip to Sochi , we will announce it to public information through the usual channels in the State Department , " said Laura Magnuson , a spokesman for the National Security Council .
Strict rules about liquids and toothpaste in carry-on bag has become standard practice in the U.S. airline after a series of bombings that plan was thwarted in the years after the Sept. 11 , 2001.
Security issues at the Winter Olympics in Sochi dated February 7 to 23 has become a major concern Washington after two deadly suicide attack last December at the city of Volgograd , southern Russia . The threat of Islamic militants in the North Caucasus region also adds to the concerns.
On Wednesday morning , officials said two U.S. warships have arrived in the Black Sea and will be ready to provide assistance in the event of a security emergency in the major sporting events .
