Hungarian Olympic Committee ( MOB ) , Wednesday ( 01/22/2014 ) , said it had received a " terrorist threat " , warning that the country did not participate in the Winter Olympics in Sochi , Russia .
Hungarian news agency MTI , Zsolt Borkai MOB President said , he received e-mails containing threats and suggested that the Hungarian contingent did not go to Russia .
" Messages like this should be taken seriously as a terrorist threat , " said Borkai .
Meanwhile, the secretary of the MOB Bence Szabo said it received information from the International Olympic Committee ( IOC ) that the number of states also received similar threatening messages .
Szabo said , MOB has been informed about the threat letter to the Hungarian police , the IOC , and the Russian Government . " The letter was written in English and Russian , " said Szabo .
In its official statement , the IOC said electronic mail sent to the MOB does not contain a threat and seems to be a random message from ordinary citizens .
The resort town of Sochi is located in the foothills of the Caucasus , Russia , which has long been a restive area . The rebels in Chechnya and Dagestan has been a long struggle for independence and vowed to disrupt the Sochi Olympics to damage the reputation of President Vladimir Putin .
In fact , one of the Caucasus rebel leader , Doku Umarov , in July last year threatened to carry out attacks to stop the sporting event .
