Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday (12/06/2014), said the number of Iraqi cities fall into the hands of militant groups ISIS is a form of failure of the US-led invasion of the country."What is happening in Iraq today is a total failure of the U.S. and UK adventure. Unity of Iraq is now in jeopardy," Lavrov said referring to the U.S. military invasion in 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein.
"We are very concerned with the situation in Iraq.'s Been a long time since we were warned that the U.S. and UK adventure will not end well," Lavrov added.
Lavrov added that Russia supports Iraqi leaders in an uncertain condition.
"We support the government and people of Iraq who are restoring peace and security in their country, but the action of our Western colleagues raises a big question," Lavrov said.
The fighter group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) held a massive military offensive that began Monday (09/06/2014) night and have so far managed to control a number of provinces and advanced towards the center of Baghdad.
The U.S. government says it is ready to help Iraq, while Britain has decided not to send troops back into the war-torn country.
Earlier, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the conflict in Syria proved to seep into neighboring countries. According to Lavrov, Hague's statement is nothing more than a cynicism.
"We understand that our British colleagues had a unique ability to distort the facts. However I did not expect to hear this kind of cynicism," said Lavrov.
